The essential idea
In the original studies, the lowest performers on specific tasks tended to overestimate their relative standing. Dunning and Kruger proposed a metacognitive account: some skills needed to perform well also help people judge their own performance. Later reanalyses dispute how much of the pattern reflects that mechanism versus statistical noise or regression to the mean.
